moving on

Lately, I've felt disconnected from my blog.  I don't know if I ever really connected with it to begin with - everything from the name to the posts bothered me, and whilst I don't want to stop blogging, I want to stop blogging here.  As Taylor Swift said: (today is) never too late to be brand new.

With that said, I won't be blogging here anymore - but you can find me at my new home, The Pigtail Pixie.  You can follow me or just the blog on Bloglovin', and you can still find me on twitter & instagram.

#LBloggers Blog Hop!

sunday social - week 87

This week, it's all about the big F-O-U-R.

1. 4 favorite bands you loved in high schoolI left high school when I was sixteen and that's almost seven years ago.  It's scary to think I've loved some of these bands for so long.  When I was in high school, I think my favourite bands were probably Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, Lifehouse & Maroon 5.  All four are still on that list, although now I think they're there for different reasons.

2. 4 go to meals you'd love to learn to cook or can cook really well
One go-to meal my husband and I both love - and we make pretty well - is chilli.  We're also pretty good at  cooking up our own spicy chicken dishes - anything that involves a combination of weird and wonderful spices with chicken, we can do (we prefer texmex/bbq/americana style).  Last week we mastered the art of chicken fried steak (based on this recipe).  And finally, one thing I really wish I could cook but I can't: egg fried rice. Cannot for the life of me get egg and rice to be separate.  It's always just one eggy lump.

3. 4 necessities to your daily life
Music. Checking twitter & tumblr.  Hugging my husband.  Some form of minty confectionary.

4. 4 makeup necessities you must have if you could only have 4 on
Eyeliner, mascara, concealer... and probably blush.  My super lazy day consists exclusively of eyeliner and mascara, so I'm not averse to being (mostly) bare-faced!

5. 4 favorite apps on your phone or iPad
I have a lot of the same apps on my phone and on my tablet, but my tablet has some added exciting things - I love the Amazon Kindle app, and I love window-shopping for houses on the Trulia app. Other things I use most often are the office app and Tumblr.

a splash of colour

The weather has been lovely today.  It's been colder than Siberia, but the sky has been bluer than blue for miles and miles and it feels like there is finally light at the end of the cold, dark, winter tunnel.

To celebrate, I've refreshed a few listings on my Etsy shop.  It's something I ought to do more, but I often lose focus and patience with it when sales are slow - which is always.  I really like today's new additions, though, and I hope you will too.

These earrings are made using super lightweight plastic hearts.  Each colour has its own beauty - they're iridescent and shimmer beautifully in the sun.  You can buy them in blue, red, green or pink from my Etsy shop.

Unicorn Dream by Magic Goose

Ever since I can remember, I've been a fan of nail polish.  When I say 'fan', I mean 'I wear it so much to the point where I feel a little uncomfortably exposed when my nails are bare'.  However, for the longest time, all I knew were the bright, shiny polishes I could buy in Boots or Superdrug.  It was only after I began to blog and follow other blogs that I discovered whole new layers to the nail world: the indie polish market.

Recently, I've bought a few indie polishes.  My collection is still pretty small, because I'm picky about the style of polish I like and indie polishes often tend to follow similar trends, but I want to share one of my most recent purchases - it's possibly one of my favourite polishes ever.

This is Unicorn Dream by Emma from Imagination in Colour.  Emma's blog was the first nail blog I ever read, and even though I'd already had my blog for a while before I started reading hers, she inspired me to blog more.  Emma has recently started her own polish company, Magic Goose, and I can honestly say it was love at first coat.

Here's a photo I posted on instagram last night just after painting - taken in questionable lighting, with flash.  The polish looks bold and full of gorgeous sparkle in the flash of a camera and these subtleties carry over into 'real' light.  This is 2-3 coats of Unicorn Dream for full opacity.

I took the following photos in natural light, after adding a couple of coats of a Barry M limited edition glitter (from Superdrug) to my index & pinkie nails.

You can see in natural light that rather than the bold blue-lilac which shows up in the flash, this polish is a much softer pink-lilac.  In the light, much clearer with a topcoat, this polish has a gorgeous pink shine.  This colour is so much paler than anything I would ordinarily wear (you only have to look back a few nail posts to see that I tend to favour brighter, bolder or darker colours) but this is so pretty.  It's delicate and feminine but it has the perfect amount of sparkle and shine to be glamorous and exciting, too.

Sunday Social

This week's Sunday Social questions are about makeup and beauty - it's been a pretty tricky one, if I'm honest!

1. How old were you when you started wearing makeup?
I started wearing makeup pretty late, I think - comparatively, at least.  I didn't wear anything at all until I was about 16, and even then I often went out with just some concealer and perhaps a swoosh of mascara.  I think I started adding foundation and eyeliner into the mix around 17.

2. What are your top 3 favorite beauty products?
Right now I love Max Factor's Whipped Creme foundation - it's really light and I love the finish.  It's heavier coverage than my day-to-day makeup (which is tinted moisturiser and a quick brush of Laura Geller baked powder) so I don't wear it often but I love how it looks and feels.  I also love the Nivea Colour Passion lipstick in Lychee and Laura Geller's Espresso Yourself eyeshadow trio.

3. What is one makeup product you don't leave home without?
I don't carry my makeup around with me - I always have a Nivea lip balm (and sometimes a tin of Vaseline too!) in my bag, and occasionally I'll throw in whatever lipstick I've applied in the morning - but I really don't carry makeup with me.  Having said that, I often find one of my Maybelline Baby Lips sticks in a coat pocket...

4. What is your daily beauty routine?
Wash face. Moisturise face with the first thing to hand (often either a cocoa & shea (body) butter, E45 or a nivea lotion, depending on where I am when I do it) and apply makeup.  I'm really lazy when it comes to skincare - it's something I want to work on but I can never inspire myself enough to actually do it.

5. What is your favorite hair/makeup product you've discovered in the last year?
MaxFactor Whipped Creme foundation. I found a sample sachet in a magazine, in shade 'natural' - which is darker than I would have bought (I usually go for the palest yellowish shade) but it turned out to be perfect!

throwback thursday...

... to the time when I wore butterflies on my head. And had a phone with a truly awful selfie-cam. Sorry about the fuzz.
